Judith Leavitt, Anne Manton, Karen Daley, &
Gail Pisarcik Lenehan
immediately after Karen Daley's induction as a Fellow of the
American
Academy of Nursing.
Massachusetts ENA members Gail Pisarcik Lenehan
and Anne Manton
congratulate Karen Daley, an emergency nurse from Massachusetts,
on her
induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurses on
November 11,
2006 in Miami. Karen , currently in a doctoral
program at Boston
College , was a staff nurse at the Brigham and
Women's Hospital
Emergency Department in 1999, when she sustained a needlestick
from a
needle infected with HIV and Hepatitis C. As president of
the
Massachusetts Nurses Association, she worked diligently,
using her
state and national network, lectured, and wrote to raise the
national
consciousness about the danger posed by sharps . She was
instrumental
in the passage of national needlestick legislation that
helps to
protect nurses and others to this day. Karen's fellowship
in the
prestigious Academy was sponsored by Gail Pisarcik Lenehan and
Judith
Leavitt. Dr. Barbara Hazard, Dean , and Dr. Barbara
Wolfe, faculty at
Boston College's School of Nursing, Mary Manning, former
Executive
Direector of the MNA, and Karen's sister, and many ANA
colleagues were
also on hand for her induction. Congratulations ,
Karen, for a well
deserved honor!
