Massachusetts ENA members Gail Pisarcik Lenehan and Anne Manton
congratulate Karen Daley, an emergency nurse from Massachusetts, on her
induction as a Fellow of the American  Academy of Nurses on November 11,
2006 in  Miami.   Karen , currently in a doctoral program at Boston
College ,  was  a staff nurse at the Brigham and Women's Hospital
Emergency Department in 1999, when she sustained a needlestick from a
needle infected with HIV and Hepatitis C.  As president of the
Massachusetts Nurses Association,  she worked diligently, using her
state and national network, lectured, and wrote to raise the national
consciousness about the danger posed by sharps .  She was instrumental
in the passage of  national needlestick legislation that helps to
protect nurses and others to this day.  Karen's fellowship in the
prestigious Academy was sponsored by Gail Pisarcik Lenehan and Judith
Leavitt.   Dr. Barbara Hazard, Dean , and Dr. Barbara Wolfe, faculty at
Boston College's School of Nursing,  Mary Manning, former Executive
Direector of the MNA, and Karen's sister, and many ANA colleagues  were
also on hand for her induction.  Congratulations , Karen,  for a well
deserved honor!
